Where were you on the 20th of January, 2001? Well, I for one was in Washington DC for the sights and sounds of the Presidential Inauguration of George W. Bush. There's nothing quite like the near critical failure of democratic institutions to rile folks up and get the juices flowing on a cold and miserable Washington winter afternoon of celebration and commiseration. (Warning: some images and audio samples depict citizens exercising their rights of peaceable assembly and free speech.)

There were perhaps 9 inauguration/parade route entry points. Each boasted double-file lines winding back at least a full city block and were staffed by 10+ inspectors of various sorts.

One gentleman holds a large sign in the shape of a raised middle finger and fist. Every once in a while he'd raise an extra transformer-finger to give bemused passers-by the "Peace" sign... and slyly, vice versa.

This sign reads: The people have spoken (all five of them). Other popular signs were: "Bush and Scalia sitting in a tree, K I S S I N G", "Hail to the Thief" and "Jail to the Thief" variations, "Oaf of Office" and "Illegitimable!".

In the distance lay the Capital steps where George Bush was sworn in as the 43rd President of the United States. Chief Justice William Renquist did the honors after receiving unprecedented applause by supporters at his introduction.
