After that I helped hang signage and raised the orange lotus flags over the festival ticket tent before heading home.

Experiencing the Lotus festival can be a frazzling experience. Each night there are several bands (all of which are interesting) playing at any given time. They nature of it is such that you can come and go at any act between songs which makes it possible to catch parts of overlapping sets. Because the acts themselves are so unique and the opportunity so rare to listen to them live it's common practice to sample as many as possible.

That's what I and my friend Michelle did that Friday evening. Over the course of the evening from 7pm to 12AM we heard Arabic Jazz, Mongolian Traditional Songs, Salsa, Scots-Irish Traditional, Tuvan-Electric Music.

Although Lotus itself could certainly be a social event, in my personal experience it consists largely of listening in rapt fascination of the many performers and the intermediate hustling between venues to catch the next--then ducking out of that show to catch another overlapping performance, and so on. It makes for a pace to the evening that is often (but not always) incongruous with the character of the acts themselves. The festival is (for me at least) frenetic and exciting and the acts rare and amazing. It's something akin to being in a giant candy store with only 50 cents in your pocket and your Mom, head cocked, tapping her foot at the register--so many delights to choose from and so little time.

Here we are at the ticket tent. The next group of media in this album are images and sounds from the acts we saw that night...
