Where were you on the 20th of January, 2001? Well, I for one was in Washington DC for the sights and sounds of the Presidential Inauguration of George W. Bush. There's nothing quite like the near critical failure of democratic institutions to rile folks up and get the juices flowing on a cold and miserable Washington winter afternoon of celebration and commiseration. (Warning: some images and audio samples depict citizens exercising their rights of peaceable assembly and free speech.)

The Press-driven "legal-wranglin" roundup mayhem of the post-election campaign aside, it has never been so clear how detached our population is from public life. A collective shrug washes over the nation as the less-than-spontaneously protesting protestors "protest" in front of the sea of cameras. ...more

Future of Intellectual Property Debate

I attended the Berkman Center's Future of Intellectual Property Debate with Ryan. We spotted a couple of flyers while strolling around campus and decided fate was knocking. The debate was between Larry Lessig and Jack Valenti of the MPAA on the topic of intellectual property and the internet. I'd seen Lessig before at the World Wide Web conference earlier in the summer and was impressed with (some of) his arguments. I was curious to see Jack Valenti. He proved deft at avoiding directly answering nearly every substantive question. A cursory look at the debate can be found here.
