Highway Hijinks...

My volunteer shift was from 11AM to 3PM on Friday 9/21/01, although I ended up working until 4pm. I was volunteering to load-in PA's and misc. stage equipment, but ended up doing a lot of other things as well. In fact the first thing I was asked to do was pick up the Wrigley Sisters (a Scottsh traditional act) at their hotel and bring them to WGBH (the community radio station). So I zipped off in my motorcar. But as it turns out they were already on their way. A wee bit of miscommunication--but that can be expected from such a large operation as the Lotus.

Placing Pylons

When I returned I headed off to set up traffic barricades on 4th street between the 2nd Story and Waldron Arts Center venues. This went pretty well except for the drivers that couldn't seem to understand what bright orange barriers and pylons mean. One interesting thing I observed is that no passing Lotus volunteer missed the opportunity to ever-so-slightly rearrange the pylons according to their particular aesthetic taste once they were set out--each deeply surveying the scene and then slightly shifting a pylon or two this way or that.

2nd Story Load-in

After bringing Bloomington cross-town transit to a halt I loaded equipment into 2nd story with a number of other volunteers. That was the heaviest lifting of the day.

After that I went back to the bus/chum HQ and soon set off to help set up the Tree-of-Life stage on Kirkwood Ave, all the while carrying on an interesting conversation with the soundman and PA owner on the merits of different electronic music software, the business of music and whatnot.

After a while I had to move my car so as not to get a ticket. When I got back they needed me and another volunteer to run a bass amp and cabinet over to second story. I came back with my car to pickup an additional wheel-less guitar amp and dropped it off as well.
